In my software development career I have been employed by three different companies. My first job, which I started after I graduated from CPI was for Maine Fidelity Life. MFL was a small life insurance company owned by National Grange Mutual Insurance Company. It's operational headquarters were collocated with National Grange's in Keene, NH. I was employed by MFL from 1977 until 1983. I began as an entry level programmer and when I terminated my employment I was a Senior Programmer/Analyst. I was attracted to this job mainly for two reasons; first, the system on which I'd be working was written in Assembler giving me great technical experience, and second, I'd be on a small team, but with access to the resources of their larger parent company. My reason for termination was the imminent demise of my position. In 1982 National Grange sold MFL to Manulife Financial which then started moving our functions to their Canadian home office. My second position was located not too far away from Keene, in Rindge NH. It was working for Penta Systems International. Penta was, at the time, a medium size software development company in Baltimore, MD. The Rindge facility was a small satellite office. Penta's primary products were software systems used by the publishing industry. I believe the current incarnation of the company, still headed by Charlie Lankford, is Penta Technologies and is located in Wisconsin. I worked at Penta as a software developer from 1983 to 1985. It was a tremendously interesting environment in which to work. We were developing sophisticated systems on desktop computers long before this was common place. I ended my employment at Penta in 1985 so I could relocate to Connecticut. My third position was working for Travelers Insurance in Hartford, CT. I worked for Travelers from 1985 until 1999, starting as a Senior Programmer/Analyst and ending as an Associate Information engineer. While at Travelers, I worked in approximately seven different areas and on projects ranging from batch and real time mainframe systems to distributed client-server systems. I left in 1999 to complete my undergraduate degree. For information about the details of the work I did for the above three companies, I refer you to my explanations under the Experience heading. |
