My educational experience has been unorthodox. I started my career in software development without the benefit of an undergraduate degree. While my aptitude and productivity easily compensated for this lack, it has, nonetheless, been an impediment to my growth.

In 1999 I made the difficult decision to step back from my comfortable position and redirect my path. The first step in this process was to attain my Bachelors degree. The second was to tune my skill set to the career I wanted. This I accomplished by earning my Masters degree in Internet Engineering and by earning industry certification. The third step I am undertaking now. That is to relaunch my career and truly pursue my potential.

Undergraduate

My first formal computer education after high School was in the computer programming curriculum of Computer Processing Institute. CPI was a well known school in East Hartford, CT operating from the mid 1970s to the mid 1990s.

While I was there, I maintained a 4.0 grade point average. I graduated first in my class and the school recognized my efforts by awarding me the Charles Babbage Award for excellence.

In 1999, I started to pursue my undergraduate degree in earnest. Many of my courses were taken using the 'Distance Learning' format. It was an interesting time to do this as this mode of learning was just then starting to take off. I matriculated with Charter Oak State College, an accredited state college headquartered on Central Connecticut State University's campus in New Britain, CT.

Over the next two years I completed the requirements for their Computer Science concentration to earn a Bachelors of Science degree. I maintained a grade point average of 3.76 overall and 4.0 in my major. My degree was conferred with the designation "Highest Honors".

Graduate

My undergraduate degree did well in rounding out my education, but it didn't provide me with a solid footing in the field in which I am most interested. That field is Internet engineering.

After some research into programs available I decided to enroll in the Masters of Science in Internet Engineering (MSIE) program offered by the Marlboro College Graduate Center in Brattleboro, VT. Their MSIE program covered all the programming, networking and database technologies and techniques needed to develop and implement complex web applications.

The MSIE program more than lived up to my expectations. I enjoyed my experience there and received letter grades of 'A's in all my graded courses. My classmates gave me the honor of delivering our class address at our graduation. The MSIE program culminates in a Master's Thesis and the faculty awarded me a Capstone Prize for mine.

I was honored by The Graduate Center to be included in the 2004 edition of their View Book. Here are excerpts from it.

Certifications

Since completing my Masters degree I have studied for and received several Sun certifications in the Java language. They are:

  • Sun Certified Java Programmer (SCJP) -This exam based certification confirms my proficiency with the fundamentals of the Java language.
  • Sun Certified Java Developer (SCJD) - This is a performance-based certification which confirms my advanced proficiency in the Java programming language using the Java SE.
  • Sun Certified Java Developer (SCWCD) - This exam based certification attests to my proficiency in the application of Java Server Pages and servlet technologies.
